The Kiira Region Police are investigating the suspected poisoning of a 40-year-old man.
James Mubi the Kiira Region Police spokesperson identified the deceased as Ismael Kakende, a resident of Mpumudde Cell, Jinja North Division in Jinja City.
Mubi said that according to reports, Kalende had won a betting prize of sh300,000 after correctly predicting the score of the grudge English Premier League match between Arsenal and Manchester United.
“After he received the money on Friday evening, he went to a bar and lodge known as Lyagooba in Mafubira Ward, Northern Division still in Jinja City where he ordered various types of alcohol as his friends cheered him on,” he said.
Speaking to New Vision on Sunday, September 17, Mubi noted that on Saturday morning, Kalende’s lifeless body was discovered outside the bar.
“The body was found outside the bar where the deceased was having fun with friends on Friday night after winning a bet. This is highly suspicious that he may have died in the bar and his body was placed outside to conceal evidence,” he said.
Mubi added that on Saturday morning, the bar was closed and its managers vanished, fuelling suspicions of poisoning.
He noted that Kalende’s body was taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital mortuary, awaiting a postmortem exam before being handed over to his family for burial.
Mubi said investigations are ongoing and that detectives are searching for the bar owners to provide information about the circumstances that led up to Kalende’s death.
He issued a warning to the public about the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption, emphasising the health risks and the potential for fatal outcomes.
