Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide. It is that time of the year when Muslims observe fasts for 29–30 days and then culminate it with pomp and gaiety with the grand feasting of Eid-ul-Fitr. This period holds special significance for Muslims, as it is believed that Ramadan commemorates the first revelation of the Holy Quran to the Prophet Muhammad by God.

This holy month is seen as an opportunity for spiritual growth, self-improvement, and strengthening one’s relationship with Allah. Ramadan fosters a sense of community through shared experiences, gatherings for prayers and meals, and increased acts of charity and kindness.

This year, the holy month of Ramadan 2024 will begin on March 12 and will end after four weeks with Eid-ul-Fitr on April 11, 2024.

Besides observing fasts, Muslims follow some strict guidelines and the teachings of Prophet Mohammad throughout these days. Ahead of the holy month, here are a few things one should keep in mind during Ramadan.

Dos For Ramadan 2024

  1. Pray at least five times a day, and offer extra prayers for more rewards.
  2. Offer as much Zakat (charity) as possible to the poor and underprivileged during the holy month of Ramadan and also throughout the year.
  3. Start your Ramadan fast with Sehri at dawn and end the fast with Iftar after dusk.
  4. Recite the holy book of the Quran, memorise it, and evaluate the verses they read.
  5. Muslims are encouraged to practice ‘Dhikr’ which is praying to Allah and expressing gratitude.
  6. Be polite and patient while observing a fast.
  7. Muslims should seek the well-being of their families while praying.
  8. Muslims are encouraged to maintain celibacy throughout this pious period and engage in prayers to strengthen your bond with Allah.

Don’ts For Ramadan 2024

  1. While fasting in the month of Ramadan, Muslims are not allowed to eat or drink water before the Maghrib Azan post sunset.
  2. Consuming alcohol/smoking or forcefully vomiting invalidates the fast.
  3. Ramadan emphasizes self-improvement, so avoid arguing, fighting or negativity and focus on fostering peace and positive interactions.
  4. If you are fasting during Ramadan, listening to music is not acceptable. Devote more time to prayer and remember Allah.
  5. Focus on good things and avoid any feelings of hatred or bitterness as it can nullify your fast.
  6. Avoid keeping fasts if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or having a menstrual cycle.
  7. Don’t miss prayers or delay breaking a fast, during the holy time of Ramadan.
  8. Avoid using foul language while fasting.
