At a recent political gathering in Masaka city, organized by Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), singer Jose Chameleone electrified the crowd of thousands.
In the sweltering afternoon heat, Chameleone, the head of Leone Island, performed alongside numerous other artists. He took a moment to throw a word at his political and musical rival, Bobi Wine, referring to him as a “fala.”
Chameleone rallied the predominantly young crowd, urging them to abandon Bobi Wine and support Gen Muhoozi instead. His words were, “Ono Muhoozi fire…temuzina n’oli fala tuzina ne Muhoozi.”
The Greater Masaka region is widely recognized as a stronghold of Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP), as evidenced by the results of the 2021 presidential and parliamentary elections.
At the Masaka event, Bebe Cool introduced Chameleone to the stage. The two, who were once adversaries, embraced, danced, and performed some of Chameleone’s hit songs, including Kiboko Fire, Mateeka, Nkoleki, and Mama Mia.
Gen Muhoozi’s tour of Masaka was attended by ministers, parliamentarians, and other national and local leaders. However, the event took place against the backdrop of emerging divisions within the NUP’s support base in the region, following a dispute between the former Leader of Opposition and Nyendo-Mukungwe MP, Mathias Mpuuga, and Party President Bobi Wine.
Political analysts believe that Gen Muhoozi will seize this opportunity to draw the region towards his group.
