Jinja, Uganda| A man from Buyende district has been handed a 12-year sentence in the Kirinya prison located in Jinja, after admitting to the murder of his wife.
The man, 41-year-old Peter Kakaire, confessed during a plea bargain court session. Justice Dr Winfred Nabisinde oversaw this session at the High Court in Jinja city on Monday, March 18, 2024.
Kakaire was charged with the murder of his wife, Serina Kawutana, following a dispute. The court was informed that the crime occurred around 5:30pm on September 17, 2022, in Bulondo village, within the Buyende district.
Neighbours who heard the victim’s cries for help rushed to her aid, only to find Kakaire assaulting Kawutana on the head. It was reported that although the couple had separated, Kakaire had resumed his violent behavior towards his wife, causing her to bleed from her mouth and nose until she lost consciousness.
Despite being urged to rush her to the hospital, she was declared dead upon arrival. The incident was reported to the police by the neighbours, leading to Kakaire’s arrest.
The prosecution argued that Kakaire, who should have been his wife’s protector, instead subjected her to torture and pain, ultimately leading to her death.
As a result of his actions, Justice Nabisinde ordered him to serve a 12-year sentence at Kirinya prisons.
