Sheikh Mohammed bin Maktoum Bin Juma Al Maktoum, a member of Dubai’s royal family, has arrived in Uganda ahead of the Heroes Day celebrations. The Dubai Prince touched down at Entebbe International Airport at 8 p.m., where he was warmly received by Mr. Robert Mukiza, the Director General of Uganda Investment Authority (UIA). His arrival was via a private jet.
During the Heroes Day celebrations on Sunday, President Museveni will honor Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum along with 52 other distinguished individuals. Sheikh Mohammed will be awarded the prestigious Pearl of Africa Grand Master Class One medal.
As a successful businessman, Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum has made significant contributions to global enterprises and the economic sectors of the United Arab Emirates. Notably, his company, Alpha MBM, has partnered with the Ugandan government to develop a $4 billion oil refinery.
The Heroes Day event, taking place at Mpenja Church of Uganda Primary School playgrounds in Gomba District, will be celebrated under the theme “Hail our legends: A Secure Uganda Is Now a Reality.”
National Heroes Day of Uganda takes place on June 9 every year to commemorate the brave people who laid down their lives during the Ugandan Bush War between 1981 and 1986.
During this day, President Museveni honors distinguished citizens by awarding medals and recognizing their achievements.
It is estimated that around 100,000 to 500,000 people, including both combatants and civilians, died across Uganda as a result of the Ugandan-Bush War.
The war destroyed several villages and devastated people’s lives so badly that the current government is still working to rebuild the toppled infrastructures and the economy.
This year’s celebration theme is “Hail our Legends: A Secure Uganda Is Now a Reality.” It’s a time to reflect on the nation’s progress and honour those who have played a vital role in its development.
Uganda has a rich history of heroes who have made significant contributions to the nation. Here are some notable groups of heroes:
- Uganda Martyrs: These are individuals who sacrificed their lives for their faith during the late 19th century. Notable names include Yusuf Rugarama, Kakumba Makko, Ssrwanga Nuwa, and Balikuddembe Mukasa.
- National Heroes: Notable heroes include Edidian Mukiibi Luttamaguzi, who refused to reveal the hiding place of N.R.A. soldiers and was killed for it, and Yoweri Museveni, who became president after the war. While these are just a few examples, Uganda’s history is filled with remarkable individuals who have shaped the nation’s destiny.
