A group of Sunni Muslims has petitioned the High Court to block Mufti Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje’s fifth term as leader of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council. The petitioners argue that Mubajje, who was re-elected last week, has exceeded the mandatory retirement age of 70 years as stipulated in the Uganda Muslim Council Constitution.
Furthermore, the petitioners allege that Mubajje has been found guilty of misappropriating Muslim property by several commissions of inquiry, rendering him ineligible for re-election. The High Court is set to hear the case, which may determine the fate of Mubajje’s leadership. This development comes after the High Court previously quashed resolutions made by the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council general assembly in 2023, which had ousted Mubajje from office.
