13-Year-Old Girl Arrested Over Murder Of Fellow Pupil

A 13-year-old female pupil from a nursery and primary school in Gulu city has been taken into custody by the local police. The young girl, a South Sudanese national, is being held on suspicion of murdering a fellow pupil and compatriot, 14-year-old Tracy Nyatrich. Both pupils were boarders at the school.

Initial investigations suggest that a dispute broke out between the two pupils while they were collecting water. The situation tragically escalated when the accused allegedly grabbed Nyatrich by the neck and strangled her in a fit of anger.

Following this, the accused is said to have forcefully pushed Nyatrich, leading to her falling hard on the ground and losing consciousness. Despite attempts to revive her, Nyatrich was declared dead upon arrival at St Mary’s Hospital Lacor, as reported by Police spokesperson Fred Enanga.

Enanga stated that Nyatrich’s untimely death has sent ripples of shock and grief through the community, with heartfelt condolences being extended to her bereaved family, friends, and schoolmates.

Enanga further confirmed that the accused has been detained and is facing charges for her alleged violent and ruthless actions. He expressed sympathy for the young girl but emphasized the seriousness of her alleged crime.

“While sympathy is extended to the young girl, the gravity of her alleged crime cannot be understated. The act of strangling her fellow pupil and withholding her neck exhibits a level of brutality that is deeply troubling,” Enanga said.

In response to this tragic event, authorities are stressing the need for increased vigilance and supervision in school settings. They are urging school administrators to ensure sufficient staff presence to deter and address violent incidents, thereby ensuring the safety and well-being of all pupils.
