A devastating accident on the Jinja-Malaba Highway in Uganda has claimed 12 lives. The collision occurred late Sunday night when a commuter taxi, traveling from Kampala to Tororo, crashed head-on with a trailer heading from Malaba. The incident happened around 10 pm at Lwaba Village, Kapyanga Sub-county.

Vehicles Involved: Toyota Hiace commuter taxi (UBQ 772A) and a trailer (KBM 175S)
Cause of Accident: Preliminary investigations suggest a motorcycle rider attempting to overtake the trailer swerved into the taxi’s path
Fatalities: 12 people died, including the boda boda rider and passenger
– *Injuries:* None reported, but several people were rushed to the hospital

Investigation and Response:

Police in Bugiri district are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. Busoga East Police spokesperson Michael Kafayo confirmed the fatalities and stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the full details of the incident. The police have sealed off the scene, gathering witness statements and collecting evidence.

The deceased were taken to Bugiri Hospital mortuary, and police urge anyone with missing family members to visit the facility. Authorities caution road users to drive carefully, especially at night, due to poor visibility and frequent heavy truck traffic.
