Makerere Convocation Calls for Unity, Integrity and Service as Uganda Marks 64 Years of Independence

By Ms. Grace Ruto Cherotich, Vice Chairperson, Makerere University Convocation

Your Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and fellow Ugandans,

Happy Independence Day!

Today, we celebrate sixty-four years of Uganda’s independence, a milestone that honours the courage of those who secured our sovereignty, the resilience of our people, and the collective effort of generations who have built our nation. These sixty-four years represent more than the passage of time. They reflect our continuing responsibility to give independence meaning through dignity, opportunity, unity and service.

On behalf of Makerere University Convocation, I extend our warm congratulations to Your Excellency and to all Ugandans on this occasion.

We acknowledge Your Excellency’s longstanding role in Uganda’s journey towards stability and development, and your contribution to expanding education, infrastructure, research and innovation. We particularly appreciate the Government’s support for Makerere University and its investment in research through the Makerere University Research and Innovations Fund. Such support enables our scholars and graduates to develop knowledge and practical solutions that serve communities and contribute to national progress.

As we celebrate, we also reflect on the legacy that must be preserved: Uganda’s sovereignty, the sacrifices of its founding generations, the gains made in rebuilding the country, and the enduring aspiration for a peaceful, united and prosperous nation. Preserving this legacy requires strong institutions, responsible leadership, respect for our cultural heritage, and opportunities that allow every generation to contribute.

For Makerere University Convocation, this responsibility is both an honour and a call to action. Our alumni serve across public institutions, businesses, schools, hospitals and communities. We must continue to place our knowledge, skills and experience at the service of Uganda, uphold integrity in our work, mentor young people, and strengthen the connection between education and national needs.

The promise of independence is renewed when a young person can learn and find meaningful work, when research improves lives, when public resources are managed responsibly, and when citizens participate constructively in shaping their country’s future.

Your Excellency and fellow Ugandans, may this anniversary inspire us to protect what has been achieved and approach the work ahead with unity, courage and accountability. Together, let us build a legacy that future generations will inherit with pride and carry forward with purpose.

Happy 64th Independence Anniversary, Uganda!

For God and My Country.
