The Parish Development Model (PDM) continues to empower Ugandan households by supporting investments that enhance agricultural productivity, household incomes, and resilience to climate-related challenges. One notable beneficiary is Mr. Twine Rureebwa Deo, a 78-year-old resident of Kakatunda Village, Nyakabungo Ward, Muhanga Town Council in Rukiga District.
In 2023, Mr. Twine received UGX 1,000,000 under the PDM programme. Recognizing the importance of water for sustainable agricultural production, he supplemented the funds with personal savings and invested in the purchase of manure, a water pump, irrigation pipes, a water tank, and the development of a water source on his farm.
The investment marked a turning point in his farming enterprise. Prior to receiving PDM support, Mr. Twine had approximately 600 coffee trees. The establishment of an irrigation system enabled him to expand his coffee plantation by an additional 400 trees while also diversifying production through intercropping. Today, his farm includes groundnuts, beans, pumpkins, bananas, passion fruits, and various vegetables alongside coffee, maximizing land utilization and improving household food security.
Coffee remains the principal enterprise on the farm and a major source of income. During the 2025 harvesting season, Mr. Twine harvested 288 kilograms of dry coffee from the 400 coffee trees established after receiving PDM support. He sold the produce at UGX 6,000 per kilogram, generating approximately UGX 1.73 million in revenue. With the current harvesting season underway, he anticipates even higher yields and improved earnings.
According to Mr. Twine, the irrigation system has enabled year-round production, reduced the adverse effects of prolonged dry spells, and significantly improved crop performance. The increased productivity has enhanced household income, strengthened food security, and provided a more stable livelihood for his family.
Despite these achievements, he notes that limited access to capital remains a challenge, particularly in hiring labour to support farm operations and expansion. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic and committed to further developing his agricultural enterprises.
Mr. Twine expressed his appreciation to the Government of Uganda and the leadership of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) for the Parish Development Model, noting that the programme has empowered him to improve productivity, diversify his farming activities, and strengthen his household’s economic well-being.
His success story illustrates how strategic investment in irrigation and agricultural inputs can transform smallholder farming, increase resilience to climate variability, and contribute to sustainable rural development.
